The History of Tattoo Box
Since 1989, Tattoo Box has been built on a simple belief: every tattoo should be original, technically sound and created with respect for both the client and the craft. What began as a passion for tattooing has grown into an international studio with a history spanning the United States, Canada and France, while continually embracing new ideas, new technologies and new ways to serve clients.
The Beginning (1989)
Tattoo Box traces its roots to 1989, when founder Tiger Kate began tattooing professionally. From the very beginning, the focus was never on following trends, but on creating custom artwork that would remain meaningful and well-executed for decades. Every client, whether seeking a first tattoo or a large-scale custom project, deserved thoughtful design and careful craftsmanship.
Military Service and Discipline
Between 1991 and 1996, Kate served in the United States Army, working in artillery fire direction, radio communications and later HAWK radar and data systems engineering. The discipline, precision and structured problem-solving developed during military service would later influence both tattooing and software engineering, reinforcing a commitment to preparation, attention to detail and continuous learning.
Building an International Studio
Following military service, Tattoo Box expanded across North America. Over the following decades, Kate tattooed in communities throughout Missouri, California, Hawaii, Texas, North Carolina, Virginia and Québec, working with clients from diverse backgrounds while refining a reputation for custom tattooing, cover-ups and technically demanding projects.
Each city contributed something different. From military communities to major urban studios, the experience gained over thousands of tattoos shaped Tattoo Box into a studio where consultation, planning and craftsmanship became as important as the finished artwork itself.
Tattoo Box Montréal
One of Tattoo Box’s longest chapters was written in Montréal, where the studio served local residents and international visitors alike. The studio became known for bilingual service, custom artwork and a welcoming environment that encouraged clients to collaborate closely throughout the design process.
Although the Montréal chapter eventually came to a close, it remains an important part of the Tattoo Box story and continues to influence the studio’s international perspective.
A New Home in Avignon
Today, Tattoo Box proudly operates in Avignon, France, welcoming both local residents and visitors from around the world. The studio combines decades of international experience with the personalised atmosphere of an independent artist-owned business.
Clients are encouraged to bring their own ideas, reference material and personal stories, allowing every tattoo to become a unique collaboration rather than a design selected from a catalogue.
Custom Work Above Everything
Throughout its history, Tattoo Box has specialised in custom tattooing. Japanese compositions, realism, traditional work, cover-ups, black and grey pieces, colour projects and fine line designs all begin with the same philosophy: understand the client first, then design the tattoo.
Rather than forcing clients into a particular style, Tattoo Box believes every design should suit the individual’s anatomy, personality and long-term vision.
Looking Beyond Tattooing
Tattoo Box has always embraced creativity in many forms. Alongside tattooing, the studio has explored digital illustration, software development, engineering and emerging technologies. These interests eventually led to the creation of Habitav, an independent local artificial intelligence research project focused on perception, memory, environmental awareness and human-centred computing.
Although tattooing and software engineering may appear to be very different disciplines, both demand careful planning, precision, creativity and a commitment to continual improvement.
Environmental Responsibility
Tattoo Box continually seeks practical ways to reduce environmental impact without compromising hygiene or safety. Whenever possible, the studio favours materials that reduce unnecessary plastics and avoids products containing substances that are known to present unnecessary environmental or health concerns.
Education and Apprenticeship
Sharing knowledge has always been part of Tattoo Box’s philosophy. Over the years, aspiring artists have been mentored through structured apprenticeships focused on technical skill, professional ethics, hygiene and artistic development. The goal has never been simply to teach tattooing, but to help preserve the standards of the profession for future generations.
